American Library Association Awards

Where the Wild Things Are

Newbery Medal - awarded annually to the author whose book is considered the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for children.
Caldecott Medal - awarded annually to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for children.
Theodore Seuss Geisel Award
- is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers.
Coretta Scott King Award
- awarded to authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream."
Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award - awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished informational book published during the preceding year.
Pura Belpre Award - awarded biennially to a Latino author and illustrator whose work best portrays the Latino cultural experience through an outstanding book for children and youth.

With a valid Jefferson County library card, patrons can access the Alabama Virtual Library databases from home 24 hours a day. This online service features encyclopedias, magazine and newspaper databases, business, health and literature resources, phone directories and youth resources. Funding for these databases is provided by the Alabama State Legislature, the City of Hoover and the Jefferson County Library Cooperative.
