Crescent moon of Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which is a lunar calendar.  It begins when the waxing crescent first appears in the sky and continues until the new moon (about 29-30 days).  Once the new waxing crescent is sighted, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with a major holiday called Eid ul-Fitr, filled with prayers, feasts and gatherings.  This year, Ramadan is April 2-May 2, 2022.  During Ramadan, people fast (refrain from eating and drinking) when it's light outside.  Once the sun sets, families meet for big meals and to pray together.  For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to focus on their faith and also perform generous acts.  People raise money and donate supplies to help others in need.  The Ramadan Take-Home Craft is focusing on this facet of Ramadan.  Beginning today, stop by the Kid Zone to get supplies to create a cardboard collection box.  Collect change throughout the month and donate the money to the charity of your choice.  While you're at the library, grab a book from our monthly display.  You'll find several excellent titles written by and about Muslims.  The display is in the final bookcase along the starred hallway that leads to the Youth Program Room.
