A Book (or Two) for National Bathroom Reading Month

A couple of bathroom reads

June is National Bathroom Reading Month.  And don't try to tell me that's something you don't do.  You do it.  Everyone does it.  Yes, even librarians like me!  The next time you bathroom-read, try one of these fascinating nonfiction books.

Is It Okay to Pee in the Ocean?: The Fascinating Science of Our Waste and Our World by Ella Schwartz (02/21/23)
Why do we pee? Is pee just yellow water? Is the ocean a giant toilet bowl (eww!)? If you've ever wondered about your body's waste . . . urine luck! This book is all about pee: from why and how we do it, to its effects on our world.  Explore the human systems that make pee happen, tackle environmental questions about the impacts of human waste, discover surprising uses of urine throughout history-like in mouthwash and skin creams-and even try out at-home, hands-on experiments (with no bodily fluids required, of course!).

BubbleMania Is Back!

Big Bubble Head

One of our community's favorite performers is back!  Our third week of Summer Reading shows welcomes BubbleMania to the Library Theatre stage!  Casey Carle will once again WOW the audience with visual comedy, quick wit, big band swing music and the untamed, often unbelievable qualities and beauty of spherical liquids.  There will be seven performances over three days.  Seating is limited to 250 per show.  Staff will seat you on a first come, first served basis.  All people in your party must be present to be seated together.  Saving seats is not allowed.  Arriving early is recommended, especially for this round of performances.  Doors open 30 minutes before the show.

Atlantic Coast Theatre presents Rumpelstiltskin

ATC presents Rumpelstiltskin

Our second week of Summer Reading shows is bringing back a theatrical husband-wife duo!  Don Gruel and Noel Holland have performed on our stage numerous times as Atlantic Coast Theatre.  They'll be traveling from Orlando, Florida to bring the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin to life.  Adapted from the story by the Brothers Grimm, this classic uses the elaborate masks and comic characters of Commedia Del'Arte (Italian Renaissance Comedy) along with audience participation to tell the story of the magical little man who can spin straw into gold.  There will be seven performances over three days.  Seating is limited to 250 per show.  Staff will seat you on a first come, first served basis.  All people in your party must be present to be seated together.  Saving seats is not allowed.  Arriving early is recommended.  Doors open 30 minutes before the show.

Have You Found Our Summer Reading Lists Yet?

Let's Read All Together Now!
Summer Reading doesn't just include books from Hoover Public Library.  It also isn't limited to books that match the All Together Now theme.  But if you want some of your books to meet both of those criteria, we've put together some great book recommendation lists for you.  Have you found them yet?  The paper copies are shelved near the different book sections throughout the Kid Zone, and the teen paper lists are at the Teen Desk.  But you can access all of the digital versions in the Downloads section of Katie Jane's Corner.

Bienvenido, Lucky Diaz!

Lucky Diaz

Our 2023 Summer Reading stage shows start next week!  And we're beginning in a BIG way with Lucky Diaz!  This two-time Latin Grammy Award-winning artist and author was also nominated for Best Children's Music Album in the 2023 Grammy Awards!  He often records and performs with his wife Alisha Gaddis as Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band, but he will grace the stage solo at Hoover Public Library this summer!  Catch him on the Library Theatre stage for seven performances in three days.  Seating is limited to 250 per show.  Staff will seat you on a first come, first served basis.  All people in your party must be present to be seated together.  Saving seats is not allowed.  Arriving early is recommended.  Doors open 30 minutes before the show.

New in the WhoHQ

WhoHQ

Summer Reading is here, which means the WhoHQ books are about to fly off the shelves.  And we've made it easier than ever because we now have a WhoHQ section!  You'll find them at the end of the biography shelves.  The nonfiction books (the ones with Dewey Decimal numbers) are grouped together on the bottom two shelves in the middle bookcase, and the biographies take up the final full bookcase.  The newest titles will have a pink sticker covering the spine label.  Here are some of the most recent additions.  Any and all would look great on your Summer Reading log!

Perfect Anglerfish Pair

Perfect Anglerfish Pair of Picture Books

No, today is not National Anglerfish Day.  That is not a thing.  But yesterday's pair had me thinking about the ocean, and I realized I had another marine duo I could feature.

Agatha May and the Anglerfish by Nora Morrison & Jessie Ann Foley (12/13/22)
Agatha May just can’t understand why her classmates aren’t as crazy as she is about the hideous humpback anglerfish. But when a school assignment gives Agatha the chance to show everybody what they’re missing, she single-handedly schools them all--and, in the process, discovers a passion for research and an exciting new dream for her future.

Perfect Pair for World Turtle Day

Perfect Pair of books for World Turtle Day

May 23rd is World Turtle Day!  And it's a day my sister and I have celebrated for years.  Why?  Two reasons:

1. We had a pet turtle named Fred when we lived in Germany.  He was an adorable escape artist.
2. We love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Heroes in a halfshell -- TURTLE POWER!

So I always do something to recognize the day.  This year I think I'll read one of these new books about an unbelievable sea turtle named Yoshi who traveled an astounding distance after being released from the aquarium that rehabilitated her..
