Banned Books Week is September 18-24, 2022! This year's theme is Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides Us.
This annual event, which celebrates the freedom to read and highlights the value of open access of information, was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores, and libraries. Sound familiar? That's why it's still going strong! It brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
One way to participate in Banned Books Week is to read a challenged book. Click here to access a list of frequently challenged children's books. Click here to access the top 10 most challenged books for each year.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins today, but we've already been featuring amazing Latinx titles in our September book display. Take a look to find these new books and more! You can also check out our HPL Kids Facebook page.
